Kimi Antonelli has snatched victory in the Silverstone sprint. After missing out on pole by just 0.011s on Friday, the championship leader wasted little time in making his presence felt. A good launch allowed Antonelli to draw alongside Hamilton off the start, only for the Ferrari driver to cut him off and retain the lead. Antonelli stayed within touching distance of Hamilton, then began pushing for the lead on lap seven. His deployment allowed him to pass Hamilton on the Hangar Straight a lap later. The Mercedes driver steadily drew away over the next nine laps and crossed the line 2.745s clear. With this result, Antonelli has extended his championship lead to 43 points.

Lando Norris made a great start and jumped up to third. Behind him, George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri were involved in a four-way fight for fourth. Russell passed both McLarens on the opening lap but was eventually forced to slot in behind Norris. The Mercedes driver ended up fourth, ahead of Charles Leclerc, who was able to keep pace with those around him and passed Verstappen for fifth on lap 10. After losing three places at the start, a series of bold moves and good pace allowed Verstappen to recover and briefly run as high as third. However, as the sprint progressed, Verstappen’s pace tailed off, and there was little he could do to defend from the likes of Russell and Leclerc.

Oscar Piastri was hindered by a similar drop-off in pace and finished a distant seventh, 17.5s off the lead. Liam Lawson had a lengthy tussle with Isack Hadjar (who also suffered a poor start). A late move by Lawson at Stowe on lap 16 nearly caused a collision between the two, and Hadjar did little to hide his frustration. Lawson was able to fend off Hadjar and claim the final points-paying position—another credible instalment in what is becoming a highly consistent campaign for both Lawson and RB.

His teammate, Arvid Lindblad, passed Pierre Gasly for tenth on the run into Brooklands on lap five while Gasly’s teammate Franco Colapinto finished 12th. He was followed by Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, whose promising pace in free practice has not carried over into the sprint. Ollie Bearman finished 15th ahead of Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon and Valtteri Bottas.

Having voiced his dismay at having to drive these battery-centric cars around Silverstone, Fernando Alonso endured a frustrating sprint.  Starting 21st, Alonso collided with Cadillac’s Sergio Pérez at turn three on lap two. The incident earned Perez a ten-second penalty, which relegated him to last behind the two Aston Martins of Alonso and Lance Stroll.

With a composed drive at what is essentially Hamilton’s circuit, Antonelli has reaffirmed his status as the championship leader. But with Hamilton on form and Russell in need of a good result, it's anyone’s guess as to who will prevail in qualifying.
